Extract from letter of 4th. March, 1912, by Commander

C. W. Beckwith, Assistant Harbour

Master.

The principal duties of the Assistant Harbour

Master are as follows:-

1. To carry out under direction of the Harbour Master all duties imposed by Ordinances.

2. To supervise the whole of the out door work of the Department and personally to see that all matters connected with

the Harbour and Shipping receive prompt attention.

3.

Daily to examine and sign entries in ships' logs.

4.

To grant permits to ships arriving with dangerous goods after examination of the manifests of the quantity carried.

5.

To hold enquiries into Harbour Collisions.

To pay surprise visits to and supervise supply of stores for all out stations.

7. To visit the Light-houses periodically and supervise the supply of stores to and make arrangements of Reliefs for same.

8. To give assistance and advice to hasters when the Typhoon Signals are flying.

9.

To control the laying down and upkeep of all moorings in the Harbour.

10.

To supervise the inspection by the Boarding Officers of Chinese Passenger Ships and emigrants.

11. To prepare papers in navigation for and to conduct the

examination of candidates for Liasters and Mates, to examine candi- -dates for Certificates of Competency as Masters of Steamships under 60 tons and to preside over the pilotage board.

12. To sign all receipts for Revenue and generally to super-

-vise the collection of same.

13.

To visit the Mercantile Marine Office weekly and

inspect the accounts.

The present holder of the post is also Government

Coaling Officer and is charged with the up-keep and administration
